Looked up at the chalkboard menu. Everything has some elitist/obscure film reference as its name. Vegan stuff, hippie stuff, etc. Listed near the bottom was an item that simply stated, “Rhodehamel – Concept Waffle.” I asked the girl at the counter, “What’s the Rhodehamel waffle thing?” Her eyes glazed over for a moment as she tried to recall the item I was referring to. When she returned to planet Earth, she looked into my eyes and said, “Oh. The Rhodehamel. It’s a concept waffle.”

I blinked at her twice. Eventually she elaborated, “We make a waffle and put whatever we want on it, and then you eat it on the little stage out there while everyone watches.”

“That’s…bizarre,” I responded after a moment’s deliberation. It was then her turn to double blink at me. Apparently the thought hadn’t occurred to her.

I ordered a large coffee, handed her two bucks and walked briskly away. Freaking hipster kids.
